Ten-year-old Milo is bored one afternoon when a Phantom Tollbooth mysteriously arrives in his room with the instructions, “Have your destination in mind.” Traveling in his toy car, Milo arrives in Dictionopolis to discover that King Azaz the Unabridged is at war with The Mathemagician of Digitopolis over whether words or numbers are more important. Milo, joined by Tock and The Humbug, resolves to rescue Princess Sweet Rhyme and Princess Pure Reason from the Castle-in-the-Air to restore peace to the land. But the Castle-in-the-Air is guarded by ferocious demons….

By chance, Kris Kringle, an old man in a retirement home, gets a job working as Santa for Macy’s. Kris unleashes waves of good will with Macy’s customers and the commercial world of New York City by referring parents to other stores to find exactly the toy their child has asked for. Seen as deluded and dangerous by Macy’s vocational counselor, who plots to have Kris shanghaied to Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital, Kris ends up in a court competency hearing. Especially at stake is one little girl’s belief in Santa. In a dramatic decision, the court confirms Kris as the true Santa, allowing Susan and countless other children to experience the joy of childhood fantasy.

Produced by special arrangement with Dramatic Publishing. Performances run weekends from Friday November 29, 2019 through Sunday December 22, 2019 with Friday and Saturday evening performances at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission. This brand new work evokes contemporary issues of human atrocities as well as absurdities set to pop-culture mockery, poetry, and rock. Six women take the stage with their instruments and voices and only one purpose, to change the world.

Maryland Opera Studio (MOS) presents Ariodante. After its initial debut, this early 18th century opera by George Frideric Handel fell into oblivion for two centuries. Rediscovered in the 1970s, Ariodante is now considered a Baroque masterpiece for its emotionally evocative arias. Don’t miss this story of royalty, love and intrigue.

Sung in Italian with English supertitles.

The fall opera has charmingly become known as the “white opera” since the performers wear simplified white muslin period costumes. The white opera is the art form at its most elemental—the singer, the story and the music take center stage. In addition to the MOS singers, this performance features undergraduate students from UMD Choral Activities and M.F.A. design students from the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies. Under the direction of Craig Kier, the MOS is dedicated to the future of opera. Preparing the next generation of great singers and offering performances ranging from classic repertoire to provocative new works, they are building audiences and advancing the art that sustains them.
