Postcards from the Border is an empathic, multimedia piece at the intersection of music, spoken word and film that offers an intellectual and uniquely Latin American perspective on the lines bisecting both our maps and our hearts.
Oscar Cásares, an acclaimed novelist from the Rio Grande Valley, wanted to share his experience of growing up on the border with his 10-year-old daughter, Elena. To tell this story, Cásares and photographer Joel Salcido traveled the length of the Rio Grande, from El Paso and Juarez to Brownsville and Matamoros to reveal his roots and the subtle and profound details of those who live there.
Originally appearing in Texas Monthly, those words and images are now brought to life in a new stage production with music by celebrated singer-songwriter Carrie Rodriguez and her five-piece band, narrated by Cásares alongside Salcido’s stirring images. This is a story steeped in the rich and inspiring history of America. Here, in this corner of the country, kids are raised to cross fluidly into both cultures and languages, to listen to pop music as easily as they do polkas and rancheras, to speak to their teachers in English and their grandparents in Spanish, and to everyone else in both languages, often simultaneously. Together, these artists will illuminate the often-overlooked stories of generations of families at the edge of our country. This is the story of the border you’ve never heard.

Lost in confusion and pain, she battles to find her voice and the strength to heal. As her family struggles to understand her hurt, they too are forced to confront their own fears, failures, and faith. Together, through moments of heartbreak, tears, and revelation, they learn that healing begins not in silence — but in unity, prayer, and love. This moving production is a testament to resilience, forgiveness, and the power of hope. Yet I Stand is more than a play — it’s a call to open hearts, start conversations, and remind every survivor: you are not alone.

Never Thought I Was Black Till I Came to America is a riveting one-woman theatrical experience by Anna Mwalagho — actress, singer, poet, storyteller, and cultural truth-teller. Through an unforgettable blend of comedy, storytelling, poetry, prose, music, and lived anecdotes, Mwalagho invites audiences into her deeply personal journey of identity, migration, and belonging.
The play traces the winding road of challenges and triumphs faced by an African woman navigating life in America — where race, culture, and self-definition collide in unexpected ways. With wit, vulnerability, and fearless honesty, Mwalagho explores a truth many overlook: migration is not new; it is the story of humanity itself. Yet each journey carries its own cost, courage, and transformation.
By turns hilarious, poignant, and thought-provoking, the performance disarms with laughter before confronting audiences with questions that linger long after the curtain falls. As the final words echo — “At some point, we have all been immigrants, searching for a place called home in a foreign land” — the play leaves viewers both challenged and healed.
A labor of love and a lifelong dream, Never Thought I Was Black Till I Came to America celebrates African identity, honors common humanity, and dares to tell the stories too often left unheard. Written and performed by Anna Mwalagho, and edited and debut directed by Mkawasi Mcharo Hall, this bold and unapologetic work is more than a performance — it is a movement.
