August 18, 20 & 21, 2016

Seussical, by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. Directed by Jon Gardner. Choreographed by Rikki Howie Lacewell. Circus coached by Laura Adams

Please click here for more information.

Auditions for Seussical will be held at the Greenbelt Arts Center on Thursday, August 18 at 7pm, Saturday, August 20 at 2pm and Sunday, August 21 at 2pm. Call-backs will be Thursday, August 25, if necessary.

Rehearsals will begin October 1 and will be 3 or 4 times per week until tech week with the final schedule depending on conflicts. There will be nine performances from December 2 to 18 on each Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with afternoon matinees on each Sunday and on Saturday December 10, and evening performances on the other days.

Location: Greenbelt Arts Center

All the leads, feature roles and ensemble sing in the show. Most roles dance. We will also be including circus performers throughout the show; the circus performers may also sing or dance if they are able. Leads and others could incorporate circus skills if they have them, but prior circus experience is not required.

Please prepare a short song (up to 32 bars) in the style of the show, or from musical theater. Bring sheet music for the piano accompanist or sing a capella; we will not use backing tracks for the auditions. Auditions will include movement or dance, so please dress appropriately; do not wear jeans and bring dance sneakers or jazz shoes if possible. There will be readings from the script. If you wish to audition for the circus roles, please bring any necessary equipment, such as a unicycle, stilts, juggling balls, etc.

Bring a headshot and theatrical resume if you have one, or be prepared to list previous acting, singing, dancing and circus training and experience. Bring a complete list of conflicts for October 1 to December 18, including all days of the week. We will try to accommodate rehearsal conflicts, but performance conflicts will not be allowed for those with lead, speaking or singing parts.

The Story:
The characters of Dr. Seuss are brought to life as The Cat in the Hat tells the stories to Jojo. Horton the Elephant Hears a Who and Hatches the Egg. Gertrude McFuzz bemoans her one-feather tale and falls for Horton while Mayzie La Bird leads Gertrude astray. The Sour Kangaroo and the Wickersham Brothers tease Horton and don’t believe in the Whos. The Whos are led by the Mayor and his Wife while the Bird Girls back up the singing and join in the fun. Our production will incorporate circus skills throughout the play, which will be featured during the Circus McGurkus scene.

Cast:
We expect to cast a combination of adults, teens and children; all ages are encouraged to audition and many of the roles are open to a wide range in ages. We welcome a diverse cast and all roles are open to all ethnicities. People of any gender may audition for any role; casting will depend on the ability to sing the vocal range and to portray the role. People with disabilities are encouraged to audition. Although circus skills are required for the Circus Performers, it is not necessary for the lead and ensemble actors to have circus abilities, but any skills that exist may be used in the show. All roles are unpaid.
