This dynamic female duo has been entertaining families for the last 6 years with their unique, upbeat style of Caribbean-themed music. Come see their new whimsical show that combines reggae-inspired tunes with two hilarious fish puppet friends at Bowie Center for the Performing Arts on January 17, 2015 at 11AM. Admission: Canned food donation or $5.00 per family. All proceeds will go to the Bowie Interfaith Pantry and Emergency Aid Fund. Beech Tree Puppets perform “The Hollow Stump”, based on the folk tale, The Mitten, retold and adapted for table-top rod-puppets. Various animals, sometimes at odds with each other in nature, find community as they seek shelter from an unexpected snow in early spring. Founders Ingrid Cowan Hass and Ole Hass guide the animal puppets as they sing and narrate. (all ages)

World Premiere.

This is a free performance sponsored by the Friends of New Deal Cafe Arts, with support from the City of Greenbelt. (2 to 4pm)

Secret Circus is the story of a traveling circus in 1930’s-era Europe, racing against time to smuggle to safety people deemed physically unacceptable by the rising fascist regime. One refugee, Anya, must confront her own discomfort with the sideshow prodigies of the circus even as she accepts their help in fleeing persecution. It is a touching, exciting, and beautiful show. Secret Circus was last performed in Greenbelt ten years ago, by Camp Encore. The 2015 edition of the show features an expanded story, with additional songs, new dialogue, and enhanced circus production values.

Lemuel has escaped slavery in Georgia and finds a new life in Gettysburg, but his ideas about the North and the South are challenged when he unexpectedly befriends Jacob, a young Confederate soldier. Understanding and empathy combat racial prejudice when these young men realize that fighting back is not the path to peaceful resolution, and that each has much to teach each other about bravery and loyalty. Gary Blackman, ArtsPower’s producer, says “By encouraging young people to see history through the eyes of characters who endured and succeeded despite facing tremendous adversity, children are able see new possibilities in their own lives.”

GREENBELT YOUTH CIRCUS 2015: TIME WARP
Ages 9-16

July 20 to August 14, 2015, from 8:45am to 3:30pm.

Our 2014 Greenbelt Youth Circus production, Game On!, was a smash hit! Now, join us in 2015 as we present our next full-length youth circus show: Time Warp. It’s a circus trip through history that you’ll never forget! Under the direction of Greg May, campers will develop, rehearse, and perform in this one-of-a-kind youth circus production. Students under age 9 admitted with Director’s approval. Contact: Greg May at gregorymay@verizon.net.

Scheduling notes: Please note that the four performances take place on evenings and weekend days, not during the regular camp hours and days. Attendance in the final week and at all four performances is mandatory to enroll in the Greenbelt Youth Circus. Campers with limited absences in the first weeks may enroll, but their participation in the shows may be limited. Previous circus camp experience is not required, but new campers especially should commit to daily attendance all four weeks. To discuss how your child’s absence will affect their participation, please contact Greg May before enrolling, at gregorymay@verizon.net.
