Welcome to Hell, where we find Ophistopheles (the demon responsible for photocopiers jamming at the worst possible moment and other office-related suffering), Incubeth (the demoness who oversees bad dating decisions), and Ahmenahmenon (who torments dieters by making them hungry in the middle of the night) hard at work summoning an angel. And this just might have worked but for two little problems. First, despite what they think, none of them are really on the same page as to what they want, and second, they are kind of incompetent. Okay, to be fair, more than just “kind of”.

So what happens? Instead of summoning one angel as planned, they wind up calling three humans down to the not-so-fiery depths: the insanely observant but thoroughly apathetic Angelina, her life-long geeky friend Devlin, and his new demon-worshipping girlfriend Lacey. This is bad enough, but when they are discovered by Fezdemona (demoness responsible for hat-based suffering) and Robert (the honorary demon who wrote Robert’s Rules of Order), suddenly all hell breaks loose. Devlin turns up dead, Robert rushes off to tell Lucifer, and nobody can decide whether Vinegar and Brimstone will be the next big craze in potato chips.

Come see “Hellbent” to learn how it all turns out!

Ticket prices: $20 general, $15 students/military/seniors

by August Wilson
directed by Craig Wallace

Location: Joe’s Movement Emporium.
This event takes place at Creative Suitland; 4719 Silver Hill Rd, Suitland-Silver Hill, MD 20746.

Troy Maxson was a star in the Negro Baseball League, but he was past his prime by the time Jackie Robinson broke the color line in 1947. Now in 1950s Pittsburgh, Troy hauls garbage to provide for his family. When his son Cory wants to play football, Troy worries the same barriers he faced will crush Cory’s dreams, and he’ll crush them first before anyone else does. But Troy’s own mistakes and regrets may be as big a threat to his family’s security as the racism that limited his opportunities. As the past closes in, Troy finds the walls he’s built for protection crumbling. For the first time in its history, National Players takes August Wilson’s most acclaimed drama in his Century Cycle Plays to the stage.

National Players is a unique ensemble bringing innovative theater to communities large and small across the United States. Founded in 1949, National Players stimulates youthful imagination and critical thinking by presenting classic plays in invigorating ways for modern audiences.

A moving and celebratory musical play in which hats become a springboard for an exploration of Black history and identity as seen through the eyes of a young Black woman who has come down South to stay with her aunt after her brother is killed in Brooklyn. Hats are everywhere, in exquisite variety, and the characters use the hats to tell tales concerning everything from the etiquette of hats to their historical and contemporary social functioning. There is a hat for every occasion, from flirting to churchgoing to funerals to baptisms, and the tradition of hats is traced back to African rituals and slavery and forward to the New Testament and current fashion. The conclusion finds the standoffish young woman, whose cultural identity as a young black Brooklyn woman has been so at odds with the more traditional and older Southern blacks, embracing hats and their cultural significance as a part of her own fiercely independent identity.

DC area actor, director and theater educator Alina Collins Maldonado brings her latest work, What to Expect When You’re La Virgen, to the Kogod Theatre for a staged reading. A very pregnant Virgen de Guadalupe wakes up on December 12 to work her first feast day as La Virgen. Excited to answer calls for help, she discovers she may not be cut out for the job after receiving overwhelming prayers from Latinx mothers and daughters. How can she help them understand their worth when she’s beginning to question her own? Inspired by real interviews and conversations with Latinx women, this solo piece examines identity, cultural expectations and traditions passed down through generations. Collins Maldonado began developing this project as part of the 2020-21 NextLOOK season through The Clarice and Joe’s Movement Emporium and has continued development this year as a Clarice Artist in Residence.

This event is part of the Visiting Artist Series. The Clarice’s Visiting Artist Series features regional, national and international artists who visit the University of Maryland for performances and other activities. Beyond the stunning work these artists bring to the stage, they are also committed to extensive engagement that creates exciting connections with students and the community. During their time at UMD, Alina will have engaged in: Class visits to students in the UMD School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies; and Storytelling circles with members of our local community.
