Suffrage plays are Edwardian comedies created to entertain women as the picketed and protested for the right to vote at the other turn of the century. Quick, witty, and entertaining, these plays were often inspired from real events. American women went to England where they learned the tactics of the Suffrage women. This included such activities as ballooning over Parliament and ripping the greens of the golf course with the words, “No Vote. No Golf” among many many other things. For the Americans having gathered every detail of Congressmen and Senators right down to the names of the pets, children, wives, and favorite foods and vacationing spots, to no avail after decades of kind attempts, this new approach would prove both controversial and effective. Erased from history for a century, Venus brings these plays back to life to celebrate the strong shoulders of women on which we all stand today. “There were over 400 female playwrights in Britain between the years 1900 and 1920, a period which witnessed enormous political and social change.”

Masked for Murder

Mardi Gras is a festive time – especially in The Big Easy where Krewes of revelers parade through the streets dressed in their unique costumes, throwing keepsakes to the crowds. Each year, the Krewe de Tromperie, a troupe made up of amateur and professional entertainers enthrall those stationed along the parade route with costumes mimicking happy and sad theatrical masks.

Ruling over the festivities, sitting in a prominent spot on the Krewe’s float, is the Tromperie Royale, a masked local celebrity whose identity is revealed at the end of the parade. But, this year, the term “end” had a new meaning, for royalty has its enemies, and murder would make an appearance before the unmasking could occur. Who would camouflage such a foul deed, and what would prompt such an inglorious demise to the royal ruler?

Only keen investigative skills and a sharp eye will uncover the nefarious person who was masked for murder.

Description: Unable to sleep, Elaine Wheeler paces the living room of her Manhattan townhouse, troubled by unsettling memories and vague fears. Elaine’s terror grows as she sees (or thinks she sees) a murder committed in the townhouse across the way. After several “crying wolf” calls to the police, all to no avail, and a visit from a psychiatrist hired by her husband, Elaine may be on the verge of a breakdown. Should Elaine commit herself to a sanitarium for treatment? From this point on, the plot moves quickly and grippingly as those involved—Elaine’s old friend and house guest Blanche; the inquisitive and rather sinister man who lives next door; and the nosy German maid Helga—all contribute to the deepening suspense and mystery of the play as it draws toward its riveting and chilling climax.
